Thank You!

The students have all headed out on break, but we wanted to give a special thank you to all of our generous donors who gave donations to the McGovern Center this year.  With your gifts, the McGovern Center can continue helping to develop servant-minded and globally engaged student leaders!

Thank you for all your support!  Hope you all have a Merry Christmas!

George and Eleanor McGovern

School Lunch Program

Senator George McGovern was passionate about the value of school lunch programs.  In his honor, the McGovern Center has been raising funds to launch a sustainable school lunch program in Uganda.  A DWU team of staff and students has been working with local leaders in Uganda to create the feeding program– a garden capable of feeding 100 children on one acre of land.  The garden will be overseen by the parent-teacher organization at the schools and the students themselves.  Over the last few months, the DWU team and our partners in Uganda have been doing lots of work to get this project going!

The DWU team has been working to develop classroom curriculum that incorporates preparing the garden, planting, growing, harvesting, and managing the garden’s produce.

Early morning breakfast meeting or curriculum writing party?  BOTH!

The students who are headed to Uganda at the end of December also met with friends at Mebius Nursery in Mitchell to get some ideas and information about hydroponic farming and vertical gardening.  They plan to share some of these ideas and designs to get the program going in Uganda.

We also want to extend a big thank you to Champions House Foundation in Chamberlain for their support in donating funds for the wells for the school lunch program!  Thank you, Champions House, for seeing the vision of this project and helping to make it a reality!

We will keep you posted as the School Lunch Program continues to unfold!
